Las Cruces Public Libraries is hosting a series of events centered around the theme of "Wicked," inspired by both the classic tale "The Wizard of Oz" and its modern reinterpretations. On Monday, January 6, 2025, from 2 to 4:45 p.m., attendees can watch "The Wizard of Oz" at the Thomas Branigan Memorial Library's Staff Conference Room. This screening coincides with the release of "Wicked: Part 1," directed by Jon M. Chu, which is based on the Broadway musical adapted from Gregory Maguire’s novel.

A related event will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2025, where the Banned Books Club will discuss Maguire's book "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West." This meeting will take place from noon to 1 p.m. in the library conference room and is also accessible via Zoom.

Maguire’s novel offers a political perspective on how societies create villains to redirect anger or enforce loyalty. The club will explore why this book differs significantly from its adaptations in film and theater.

Physical copies of "Wicked" are available at the library's reference desk on a first-come-first-served basis. E-reader and audiobook versions can be accessed through Hoopla. For further details or assistance, patrons can contact Mindy Del Campo at (575) 528-4024 or [email protected].

For those needing alternative formats or accommodations for disabilities to participate in these events, they are encouraged to call (575) 528-4102 at least two days prior.
