A diverse array of dance styles will be presented at the New Mexico State University Dance Program's 2024 Fall Dance Concert. The event begins tonight and continues through Sunday at Rentfrow Hall on the NMSU Las Cruces campus.
Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight, Friday, and Saturday, with a matinee at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are available online.
The concert features choreographers from the NMSU dance faculty, including Joshua L. Peugh from Dark Circles Contemporary Dance Company, Tara Madsen Robbins, an international dance artist and educator, and Abraham Quintero from Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua. Special performances will include NMSU’s ballet folklórico and mariachi band, the NMSU Dancesport Ensemble, and The Pulse Dance Collective.
Quintero’s performance will highlight stories of rodeo in northern Mexican dance forms such as Raza and Huapango. The program also includes world dances like flamenco, cha-cha, Viennese waltz, and contemporary pieces by alumna Applehelen Kirby and faculty member Ana Suffle. Other contemporary works are choreographed by Peugh with a collaboration between Madsen and Ryan McMullen, Director of the NMSU Dance Program.
“Students auditioned to work with the choreographers in August and have been rehearsing several hours per week in preparation in addition to their dance technique classes,” McMullen said.
Previous concerts have sold out quickly. Attendees are encouraged to purchase tickets early, which range from $5 to $15.
“Previous performances in Rentfrow Hall have traditionally sold out, and I am hoping we can achieve that again, this time with four consecutive performances,” McMullen said. “We’re excited for the opportunity to showcase our talented staff, faculty and guests to the community.”
