New Mexico State University's Emergency Planning Committee has shared important guidelines to help prevent Christmas tree fires during the holiday season. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) provides several recommendations for safely selecting, setting up, decorating, and disposing of a Christmas tree.

One suggestion is to test the freshness of a tree before purchasing it by running your hands along one of its branches. "If you end up with more than a few needles, it’s a sign that the tree may be too dry," advises the NFPA. After choosing a fresh tree, cutting two inches from the base of the trunk before placing it in a stand and adding water daily can help maintain hydration.

To reduce fire risks, trees should be placed at least three feet away from heat sources such as fireplaces and radiators. Additionally, ensuring that decorative lights are in good condition and used according to manufacturer instructions is crucial. When buying new lights, consumers are advised to look for products tested by an independent laboratory.

According to NFPA statistics, lighting and electrical equipment are responsible for most Christmas tree fires in homes. "Electrical distribution or lighting equipment was involved in more than two in five (41 percent) home Christmas tree fires," states the research. It also highlights that 20 percent of these fires were started by lamps or bulbs, while 11 percent were initiated by candles.

The living room is identified as the starting point for 40 percent of home Christmas tree fires. A significant number occur in January when dried-out trees become hazardous if not disposed of promptly after the holidays.

For further guidance on holiday fire safety, individuals can visit the NFPA website.
