New Mexico State University President Valerio Ferme announced that Mario Moccia will leave his position as the university's athletics director. In the same announcement, Ferme revealed that Amber Burdge, previously NMSU’s deputy athletic director for strategic initiatives and leadership, has been appointed as acting athletics director, effective immediately.

"After carefully reviewing the recent report issued by the New Mexico Department of Justice, I felt we needed a fresh start in our athletics program," Ferme stated. "I have utter confidence in Dr. Burdge’s ability to lead our Athletic Department, and look forward to working with her in the coming months."

Burdge has been recognized for her student-first approach and contributions to NMSU’s strategic response to hazing prevention. Her prior roles include associate athletic director for student-athlete success services at Louisiana Tech University, where she oversaw academic improvements and community service initiatives. She also served as athletic director at Neosho County Community College, leading 16 sports programs that achieved six national titles and produced 36 NJCAA All-American accolades.

Her career includes leadership positions at Stephen F. Austin and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with a focus on academic and leadership development. Burdge holds a bachelor's degree in health and a master's degree in counseling from Oklahoma State University, along with a Doctor of Education from Louisiana Tech.

Ferme and Burdge are scheduled to address the media at a news conference on Friday, Jan. 3 at 9 a.m., located at NMSU’s Fulton Center on the third floor of the Danny Villanueva Victory Club.
