Dr. Luis Vazquez, the wellness coordinator for the Las Cruces Police Department, has been appointed to a three-year term on the Committee of Socioeconomic Status for the American Psychological Association (APA). The committee aims to address socioeconomic status issues and promote attention to these matters in psychological research and practice.

The committee's responsibilities include gathering information on socioeconomic status (SES), promoting scientific understanding of poverty and SES roles in health, education, and welfare, developing psychology approaches that consider SES effects on development and well-being, and advocating for policies to reduce disparities between SES groups. Their goal is to ensure that socioeconomic status issues receive full attention from the APA.

Vazquez's term started on January 1, 2025, and will end on December 31, 2027. In his role as wellness coordinator at LCPD, Vazquez assists officers with fitness, nutrition, physical health, and mental/emotional health balance. He also conducts individual and group evaluations.

During his time with LCPD since July 2024, Vazquez has contributed to developing the department’s Six Pillars of Wellness: mental, emotional, physical, social, spiritual, and financial. This initiative is based on the idea that strengthening these pillars enhances an employee's resilience in facing challenges.
