Las Cruces Public Libraries is marking Black History Month with a series of events centered around the movie and book "Beloved" by Toni Morrison. The film will be shown at 2 p.m. on February 3 in the Staff Conference Room at Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, located at 200 E. Picacho Ave. The movie has an R rating.

The Banned Books Club will hold its monthly meeting to discuss both the book and film "Beloved" from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on February 27, also in the Staff Conference Room at Thomas Branigan Memorial Library. “Beloved” explores the painful memories of a former slave in post-Civil War Ohio and received the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1988.

In addition, the Social Justice Reading Group plans to discuss “A Little Devil in America: In Praise of Black Performance” by Hanif Abdurraqib from 3-4 p.m. on February 25 at Branigan Memorial Library. This book won the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction in 2002 and was a National Book Award finalist. The session will examine the cultural contributions of artists like Michael Jackson, Patti LaBelle, Billy Dee Williams, Wu-Tang Clan, Dave Chappelle, among others.

Copies of both books are available at the library's reference desk or can be accessed digitally through the Las Cruces Public Libraries Hoopla app. For more details, Mindy Del Campo can be contacted at (575) 528-4024 or via email.
