On January 29, Las Cruces Public Schools (LCPS) celebrated the completion of a significant renovation project at Desert Hills Elementary. The updates aimed to provide a safe and engaging environment for students and staff, enhancing teaching and learning experiences.
A key focus was redesigning the pickup and drop-off area to ease traffic congestion on Roadrunner Parkway during peak hours. The new vehicular circulation system accommodates existing transportation needs, including eight morning and nine afternoon buses, six daycare vans, separate zones for K-2nd and 3rd-5th grades drop-offs/pick-ups, and dedicated parking for visitors and staff.
The project also included constructing a 12,119-square-foot multipurpose space to support extracurricular activities. This facility features bleachers, restrooms, an office, storage space, a kitchen with serving and dishwashing areas, and mechanical and electrical rooms.
In response to the student population growth noted in 2019—from 648 to 713—five new kindergarten classrooms were added. These classrooms cover an additional 7,300 square feet and include individual restrooms. Designed with energy efficiency in mind, they incorporate durable materials that meet district standards for heating and cooling systems.
Security enhancements included upgrading the school entry with a secure vestibule aligned with district safety protocols. The nurse’s area was also updated to comply with New Mexico Public School Facilities Authority Adequacy Standards.
These upgrades aim to create a welcoming space for students, parents, and staff while supporting the future well-being of Las Cruces. Funded by voter-approved general obligation bonds as part of the LCPS Capital Outlay Program, these improvements strengthen the school community.
