Feb. 11, 2025, marks a year since Las Cruces Police Department officer Jonah Hernandez was killed in the line of duty. Chief Jeremy Story expressed that not a day has passed without remembering Hernandez and praised his family for their kindness and inspiration despite their loss.

Hernandez is survived by his wife and two sons, aged 11 and 3. The department is holding several events to honor him. On January 31, former officer turned country musician Frank Ray hosted an event at the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum with songwriters Trannie Anderson, Seth Mosley, and Jordan Walker performing for family members and first responders.

On February 11, LCPD officers will gather for a private memorial. On February 16, officers will join the second annual New Mexico Fallen Officer Memorial Run in downtown Las Cruces to honor fallen officers from the region.

Officer Hernandez had been with LCPD for two years when he responded to a trespassing call on February 11, 2024. He was stabbed multiple times but received aid from a witness who neutralized the suspect before first responders arrived. Despite efforts to save him at MountainView Regional Medical Center, Hernandez succumbed to his injuries at age 35.

He was laid to rest on February 21, 2024, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery in El Paso, Texas.
