Jay Gogue, Interim President of the NMSU System | New Mexico State University
Judith Flores Carmona, a professor at New Mexico State University (NMSU), has made significant contributions to multicultural education and critical pedagogies. She serves in the School of Teacher Preparation, Administration and Leadership within the College of Health, Education and Social Transformation. Flores Carmona also holds a position as a faculty fellow at the Honors College.
Born in Veracruz, Mexico, and raised in south Los Angeles, Flores Carmona is a first-generation college student who was promoted to professor in 2023. She obtained her Ph.D. in sociology of education from the University of Utah and joined NMSU's faculty in 2012.
Her work is centered around social justice, focusing on critical pedagogy, critical race feminism, critical multicultural education, and testimonio methodology. Her research has been featured in several academic publications including Qualitative Inquiry and Equity and Excellence in Education. Additionally, she is the lead editor of Chicana/Latina Studies (C/LS), which will be based at NMSU until Spring 2027.
In January 2025, during NMSU’s spring convocation, Flores Carmona was honored with the Distinguished Career Award for Social Sciences and Humanities.
