New Mexico State University (NMSU) is continuing its free tax-filing assistance program for the NMSU and Las Cruces communities. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, supported by the IRS, trains accounting students in tax law and software to help taxpayers with their returns.

Services are available from 9 a.m. to noon every Friday until April 11, except during spring break on March 14. Located in Business Complex Room 108, the program is led by the Coalition for Family Economic Progress and organized by GECU Community Development.

In the previous year, VITA prepared 204 federal income tax returns and 202 New Mexico income tax returns. Rebeca Pérez, assistant professor at NMSU’s Department of Accounting and Information Systems, stated: “We know that in our first year, many people may not have realized we were there to help, so it’s important to keep the program going.”

This year sees participation from 28 students, five of whom are returning participants. Students earn course credit or volunteer their time. Joseph Ruby noted that "the VITA program bridges" classroom learning with real-world application.

First-time participant Steven Trujillo shared his initial apprehension but credited Dr. Pérez and experienced peers for support: “We are all volunteers...so it is in everyone's interest to make sure everyone succeeds in serving our community.”

Karla Alvarez emphasized the practical benefits: “I gain tax knowledge, problem-solving skills, attention to detail and client interaction.” The service has been well-received by taxpayers who appreciate its convenience.

Starting March 21, non-resident returns will be prioritized for international students at NMSU. According to Pérez: “These students are new to the U.S. and to the tax system...we help that group of students.”

The service operates on a first-come-first-served basis; early visits are recommended. For more information on what documents to bring or general inquiries about VITA services, visit freetaxeselpaso.org.
