New Mexico State University is placing emphasis on safety during graduation celebrations as April marks Alcohol Awareness Month. With the event approaching, the university's Emergency Planning Committee is focused on raising awareness around alcohol consumption and promoting safe celebration practices.
The committee emphasizes the importance of ensuring safe transportation. "Designate a driver in your group who will not be drinking to ensure everyone gets home safely," they advise. In the absence of a designated driver, party-goers are encouraged to "plan ahead" and consider public transportation options such as buses, trains, or taxis.
For those hosting gatherings, the committee highlights the responsibilities hosts bear in monitoring their guests' sobriety to prevent incidents of drunk driving. "Party hosts can face legal consequences, including civil lawsuits and potential criminal charges, if a guest who drinks at their party causes harm or injury while driving drunk."
In addition to safety, the committee suggests prioritizing health by consuming food before drinking, pacing alcohol consumption, and alternating between alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. They also advise against engaging in drinking games or mixing alcohol with other substances.
The financial consequences of drunk driving are underscored by the committee, noting that "the average total cost (fines, fees, surcharges, etc.) for a first-time conviction can range from $6,000 to $28,000," with subsequent offenses leading to higher costs and possible imprisonment.
To ensure an enjoyable yet controlled graduation party, the committee recommends focusing on planning activities, establishing boundaries, and creating a safe environment for everyone involved. "Congratulations to our graduates! Go Aggies!" reads the committee's closing message, celebrating the accomplishments of the graduating class.
