Registration for the Las Cruces Police Department’s Youth Leadership Summer Camp is scheduled for Saturday, May 3, at Lynn Middle School. The camp is presented by LCPD School Resource Officers and sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences at New Mexico State University.
The camp includes two one-week sessions beginning on June 2 and June 9. The first session runs from June 2 to June 6, while the second session is from June 9 to June 13. It targets youth aged 9 to 11 who are entering 4th through 6th grades. Each session can accommodate only 20 students, and participants are not allowed to attend both sessions.
Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. on May 3 at Lynn Middle School, located at 950 S. Walnut St., and will continue until 2 p.m. or until all spots are filled. Due to high demand, early arrival is recommended.
Parents or guardians must complete registration in person. They are advised to arrive early to fill out a registration form and choose the session that aligns with their summer plans. Registration forms will be provided on the day of registration, and phone or electronic registrations are not available.
The camp is held from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily at Vista Middle School, 4465 Elks Dr. Attendees will receive breakfast, lunch, and a complimentary camp T-shirt.
The purpose of the camp is to boost students’ confidence and self-esteem while promoting teamwork. It also aims to build relationships with police officers and educate participants about the officers' daily responsibilities.
Classes are conducted by LCPD officers and professional staff from the Las Cruces Fire Department and the New Mexico National Guard. In addition, campers will enjoy a field trip to New Mexico State University's campus.
