Dona Ana County NM issued the following announcement on Oct. 2.
A rabies positive bat was found in the community of Valle del Rio on September 30, 2020. From 2000-2019, there were a total of 13 rabid bats in Doña Ana County.
“If you encounter a bat, do not attempt to remove it. Stay away from the bat and keep your pets away from it,” said Officer Raymond Adams from the Doña Ana County Animal Control. “Do not touch or handle the bat, even if it is dead or unresponsive. Contact the Doña Ana County Animal Control for removal,” he said.
Make certain your pets’ rabies vaccinations are up to date. Report all interactions with bats by calling Central Dispatch is (575) 526-0795 option 6. If you are bitten by a bat, call 911 immediately.
