The Las Cruces Fire Department is urging residents to change the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors as they adjust their clocks for daylight saving time. The time change occurs at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 9, marking the start of daylight saving time, which will continue until November 2, 2025.

Fire officials recommend replacing batteries and testing alarms twice annually, using the beginning and end of daylight saving time as reminders. To test a smoke detector's functionality, press and hold its "test" button. A loud beep indicates it is working correctly. The department advises against using candles or matches to test detectors, as this can lead to malfunction during an actual fire.
