This building was our home for many years. Some county employees have said they experienced paranormal activity while working there. What about you? We want to hear your story about ghost sightings at the old courthouse!
The Old Doña Ana County Government Center Courthouse, at 251 w. Amador Ave., has a long history in the community going back to when it was built and completed in 1937 with four stories, including a basement. The jail annex was added in 1969.
According to David Crider with Southwest Expeditions, which currently occupies the building, the courthouse was in operation until 2008 and is listed on the National Historic Register.
However, Crider said ghost sightings have been reported since the early days of the building, including by former inmates and personnel. Crider said he was skeptical at first, but has heard footsteps, doors slamming shut, a young girl asking if he could see her and a shadow man in the middle of the day. The resident ghosts include a young girl named Katie who is 7 years old, two women seen dressed in uniforms worn by students of the former Loretto Academy, an old judge who has been seen smoking on the balcony of the top floor and others seen or heard by visitors throughout the years, Crider said.
Multiple movie productions have used the space as the setting for action, horror and other films. This includes the upcoming Dolph Lundgren action film “Wanted Man,” which is set to film in the
jail area, Crider said, as well as other locations in the county this year. Read more: https://newzgroup.com/PDFs/4-27/367297-04-25_001006.pdf
