Hundreds of years ago, jail staff was minimal and guards were referred to as "turnkeys" since their primary duty was to lock and unlock cell doors.
In the 1950's, jails came to be called correctional institutions and guards became correctional officers. Officers received a pay increase and advanced training due to the more complex nature of the job.
In April 2022, the Doña Ana County Detention Center implemented a pay incentive for all new officers hired, from $4,000 to $6,000 based on years of experience.
Correctional officers help keep our community safe and we honor and appreciate their commitment. We don't often see them as part of public service, but it is very important to remember that they play a large part in ensuring public safety. So to all of our existing, new, and potential correctional officers - WE THANK YOU!
