Dr. Madden Retires After 38 Years | The Blue Diamond Gallery FAQ
From January 11, 2023 post.
David Austin joined Doña Ana County in September 1997 as a Detention Officer. He was promoted in 2001 to Sergeant and transferred to the juvenile facility in 2009, where he now supervises both officers and detainees.
Sgt. Austin is really good at communicating with others. In a crisis, he specializes in de-escalating situations or using “verbal judo.” His motto is “Do not forget where you came from and treat everyone with respect.”
His supervisor, Lt. Jeremyah Pairis said, “Sgt. Austin creates an enjoyable, team-oriented workplace for everyone around him. Not only will peers and reports miss him, but all the people across the state who work with him and call the Detention Center just to sing his praises. Sgt. Austin doesn’t demand respect from his peers. He has earned it.”
In retirement, he most looks forward to spending time with his grandson, Joshua David. He also hopes to rest and go fishing. He may get back into bowling and is considering becoming a high school official for football and softball.
Please join us in thanking Sgt. David Austin for his dedicated service to the County and our community. We wish him all the best in his retirement!
