New Mexico State University’s Dance program is experiencing a revival, with a newfound momentum under the leadership of Director Ryan McMullen. The community is invited to witness the program's resurgence at Friday's The Collection Showcase, featuring the Contemporary Dance and DanceSport ensembles. McMullen expressed his excitement about the upcoming showcase, stating, “This process started about a year ago, and I wanted the students to have some type of culminating performance. The show will be very eclectic.”

McMullen, who took on the role of director in August 2023, has been instrumental in revitalizing the program by introducing students to different dance styles and choreography. He has also brought in former faculty members like Debra Knapp and professional dance artist Joshua Peugh to enhance the students' learning experience. Peugh, who leads Dark Circles Contemporary Dance Company, is serving as the guest artist-in-residence this year, offering master classes to NMSU students.

Expressing her enthusiasm for the program's growth, NMSU dance major Antonella Palma shared, “I feel like we’re a very connected group. We’re with each other 24/7, and it feels like we’ve built a community and a family. I hope the program gets bigger.” Another NMSU dance major, Graven Babe, highlighted the supportive atmosphere within the program, saying, “Most dance programs are traditionally very competitive, but I didn’t feel that way about our program at all. We’re very happy for each other when we get to do solos. Everyone here is very mature.”

Looking ahead, McMullen aims to expand the program by organizing more performances throughout the year and creating fundraising opportunities for students to participate in conferences and competitions. He also hopes to establish a youth summer dance camp and a program for local dance teachers.

For those interested in attending Friday’s showcase at Rentfrow Hall on the NMSU Las Cruces campus, general admission tickets are available for $10. More information and ticket purchases can be found at https://thecollectionshowcase.bpt.me/.
