New Mexico State University (NMSU) has announced its Alternative Licensure Residency Program, a competitive post-baccalaureate, graduate certificate approved by the New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED). This licensure pathway is designed to prepare qualified classroom teachers. The program aims to recruit individuals who have earned a bachelor's degree or higher in a related field and are eligible for a New Mexico alternative license pathway.

The university is seeking individuals who will positively impact the social, cultural, emotional, and intellectual growth of children and youth throughout their career. Applicants must be prepared to collaborate with a mentor teacher throughout the 2024-2025 school year. NMSU is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer and educator.

The application process comprises two steps: successful completion of the application followed by an invitation for eligible applicants to participate in a 15-minute interview with a small committee via Zoom.

The Alternative Licensure Residency program offers online and in-person courses set in regular 16-week or mini-semester (8-week) course schedules. University supervisors and on-site mentor teachers will facilitate ongoing field coaching and mentoring. Each resident accepted into the program will gain classroom experience as a resident student teacher by collaborating with a mentor teacher during the 2024-2025 school year. They will also meet licensure requirements and continue receiving mentorship from district-appointed mentors during their first full year as classroom teachers.

Residents of the ALP will receive a stipend of $35,000 for the 2024-2025 school year, co-teaching experiences with Level II or Level III mentor teachers, ongoing professional development opportunities, among other benefits. Successful completion of the program will result in an interview for potential employment from participating districts.

Participants agree to at least three years of employment with their cooperating district as licensed classroom teachers contingent on positive district evaluations and completion of NMSU coursework. Residents may also choose to apply their earned credits towards a master's degree in the School of Teacher Preparation, Administration, and Leadership.
