Las Cruces Public Schools (LCPS) is inviting community members to participate in a public survey to provide input on the district's redistricting process. The survey is available from November 21 through December 10, and LCPS encourages all families and staff to contribute their perspectives.
The redistricting initiative aims to address issues such as overcrowding in East Mesa schools, balancing enrollment at high schools, and adjusting for demographic changes across the district. The focus includes balancing school capacities, improving transportation, and planning for future growth, with potential new schools in areas like Redhawk and Peachtree.
A Redistricting Advisory Committee was formed by the district to make recommendations to the LCPS Board of Education. This committee worked with a consultant to study proposed changes to school boundaries at various levels.
The district seeks feedback on several aspects of the redistricting plan:
- Impact on school zones
- Transportation concerns
- Adjustments to boundaries and transfer policies
- Long-term growth considerations
The feedback will be crucial in shaping the final plan, ensuring it meets student and family needs.
Sherley O’Brien, Chief of Student Services and Community Relations, stated: "We believe that community feedback is essential to this process. This survey gives everyone a chance to provide input on the redistricting plan, helping us ensure that decisions are made with the needs and concerns of our families in mind."
Survey results will be reviewed by LCPS and presented for consideration by the Board of Education. The community will be informed of the results after the survey concludes.
