Doña Ana County in New Mexico has been granted $85,366 from the New Mexico Outdoor Recreation Trails and Grant Program. The funds are earmarked for the design and development of a new park and trail spanning twenty acres near the Rio Grande River at the Shalem Colony Bridge, located on the outskirts of Las Cruces.
The aim of this project is to transform an area that was previously used for parties, fires, and illegal dumping into a thriving community space. The new park is expected to offer recreational opportunities and amenities for residents and visitors alike, contributing to a healthier, more enjoyable environment.
The International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) owns the land in this river corridor. The agency is currently engaged in discussions about how to limit uncontrolled vehicular access in order to protect and restore floodplain vegetation between the levees. This would reduce erosion and sedimentation in the river.
Engineering firm Wilson & Company, Inc., is working on refining the master plan in its next phase of design. Additional public meetings will be held as the project design progresses.
