A student organization at New Mexico State University dedicated to promoting the study, application, and advancement of information systems has earned two national awards.

NMSU received the top award from the Association for Information Systems Student Chapters for the 2022-2023 academic year. NMSU beat more than 40 other universities in the United States to win the New Student Chapter of the Year award. NMSU also won the Outstanding Community Service Award.

“Winning these awards reinforces our commitment to excellence and service, showcasing the dedication and impact of our members. We are proud to represent New Mexico State University on a national stage and remain persistent in our mission to empower students and serve our community,” said Deema S. Alyones, president of the NMSU AIS chapter.

“As the president of the organization, I am greatly proud and thankful for all our members who contribute to our community through fundraising, workshops, and volunteer work,” Alyones continued. “Together, with the hard work of our members and fellow officers, we have achieved this honorable award.”

Alyones and other NMSU students traveled to Logan, Utah, in March to receive the awards during the AIS Student Chapter Leadership Conference at Utah State University.

Rajaa Shindi, an assistant professor of accounting and information systems who advises the NMSU AIS chapter, was also named Best Volunteer of the Year.

“I want to congratulate my students for winning these prestigious awards,” Shindi said. “To be recognized on a national level is a testament to their dedication to one another and the NMSU community.”

Shindi established the NMSU AIS chapter in 2021. The group operates on a mission to provide opportunities for students to participate in the information technology community and explore related careers. Among other activities, active members facilitate a workshop series to share their knowledge in information systems with the greater community.
