The Las Cruces Public Schools Foundation has announced the start of its annual Care Kits for Kids Hygiene Supply Drive. The initiative, running from October 14 through November 2, aims to support students by providing essential hygiene supplies.
The drive is a collaborative effort involving Walmart, Mountain View Regional Medical Center, Memorial Medical Center, and NMSU Collegiate 4-H. It seeks to address issues related to student absenteeism linked to a lack of access to basic hygiene items.
Research indicates that students without access to soap, deodorant, shampoo, and laundry detergent are more likely to miss school due to embarrassment or discomfort. A 2021 report by Dignity Matters highlighted that students facing hygiene insecurity are 2.4 times more likely to experience frequent absences, affecting their academic performance as well as their mental and physical well-being.
Donations can be made at any participating Walmart location starting October 14 or at the LCPS Administration Office. These contributions will be distributed through middle and high school care closets.
To participate further in the collection of hygiene items for the drive or for more information, contact Brigitte Garibay, LCPS Community Outreach Liaison, at 575.527.6014. A list of needed items is available at www.lcpsf.org.
