City of Las Cruces promotes Jose Vargas to deputy director of human resources

Jose Vargas has been appointed as the Deputy Director of Human Resources for the City of Las Cruces. Vargas, who has served as the Human Resources Manager since 2022, joined the city in 2019 as an HR Analyst. He was promoted to Senior HR Analyst in July 2021 and later became HR Manager in December 2022.

Vargas has contributed significantly to various human resources programs such as Recruitment and Selection, Learning and Development, Career Development, Payroll, and Information Systems Management. His work includes implementing a new schedule for the Fire Department, conducting a Classification and Compensation study, reimplementing MUNIS Human Capital Management modules, enhancing NEOGOV functionalities, processing Salary and Benefits Projections, and redesigning an appraisal system. He also played a crucial role in integrating Payroll and Learning and Development programs during a transition of Human Resource functions.

Before his tenure with the City of Las Cruces, Vargas gained experience as an Operations Manager at The Home Depot and as an Executive Team Leader overseeing Human Resources and Operations at Target. He holds a bachelor's degree in Business Administration with a focus on Management and Marketing from New Mexico State University. Originally from New Mexico, Vargas enjoys spending time with his family and two dogs outside of work.
