The beginning of the 2023-2024 school year for Las Cruces Public Schools has been marked by familiar issues such as bus delays, driver shortages, and high temperatures. "These are the hurdles we expect at the start of any school year," stated Interim Superintendent Sherley O’Brien. "But not having solutions that our students and families can depend on is unacceptable."
O’Brien and several administrative staff members met with STS of New Mexico, the district's contracted bus company, to address ongoing bus delays. The company has struggled to manage turnover due to retirements and vacancies but is exploring new strategies to recruit qualified drivers.
"As a district, we are allocating every resource we have to alleviate the stress of these delays," O’Brien added. Measures include sending additional staff to schools where students wait for buses, providing drinks and snacks, and communicating updates with families.
Traffic issues combined with new drivers have caused some routes to be delayed by up to two hours. STS office staff struggled with call volumes from concerned parents as relief drivers were called in from other duties.
To assist parents, STS of New Mexico offers a smartphone app providing text message updates on delays and expected arrival times.
Record-breaking heat in the Mesilla Valley has compounded challenges. LCPS monitors temperatures across all classrooms and facilities closely. Executive Director of Operations Sean Barham noted safety protocols during excessive heat might involve limiting recess time and ensuring hydration for students.
Water bottle fillers installed in 2021 using federal COVID-relief funds support this effort alongside donated reusable water bottles distributed to students. Community donations of water bottles are still welcomed at the Dr. Karen M. Trujillo Administration Complex.
Despite these obstacles, O’Brien considers the school year's start successful overall: "I’ve visited campuses; I’ve talked with teachers, principals, and families—kids are excited to be back."
