Law enforcement agencies across the nation report a rise in package thefts during the holiday season. The increase is attributed to more deliveries being made at this time of year, with some occurring after sunset, providing cover for thieves known as "porch pirates."
The Las Cruces Police Department offers several strategies to prevent package theft:
- Track deliveries online and try to be home when packages are delivered.
- Require a signature for home delivery packages.
- Leave specific delivery instructions.
- Request electronic notifications upon delivery.
- Have a trusted friend or neighbor receive your package.
- Create a concealed drop-off area using planters or landscaping.
- Arrange for deliveries to your workplace if possible.
- Schedule store pickups from big box retailers.
- Deliver packages to FedEx or UPS stores for secure pickup.
- Use motion-activated porch lights and security systems like Ring or Nest cameras.
Additionally, consumers might consider insuring their packages. While insurance doesn't prevent theft, it provides compensation if items are stolen.
"Be a good neighbor and watch for suspicious activity," advises the Las Cruces Police Department. "Immediately call police if suspicious activity is seen in your neighborhood."
