In response to anticipated icy road conditions due to overnight cold temperatures, the City of Las Cruces has announced a delayed start for non-emergency operations on Friday. All city facilities that are not designated as warming stations will open at 10 a.m., while Roadrunner Transit will begin operations at 8:30 a.m.

On Thursday, January 9, 2025, cold temperatures and icy roads prompted the early closure of Las Cruces non-emergency operations by two hours. This affected public facilities such as City Hall, libraries, museums, senior programs, parks and recreation facilities, and utilities offices. These city offices closed at 3 p.m., although Roadrunner Transit maintained its regular schedule. Warming stations remained open for previously announced hours.

Emergency services like police and fire departments were not impacted by these changes. The Mesilla Valley Regional Dispatch and the 911 call center continued their operations without interruption.

The city provided safety tips for residents during the cold weather. It advised limiting outdoor exposure and dressing appropriately when outside. Motorists were urged to drive with caution by reducing speeds and increasing distances between vehicles due to potentially icy roads. Residents were also encouraged to pack warm blankets and additional cold-weather attire in their vehicles in case they become stranded temporarily. Keeping cell phones charged and checking on family, friends, and neighbors who might need assistance were also recommended.

Las Cruces Public Libraries is hosting poetry discussions and crafting sessions titled "Palabras y Artesanias (Words and Crafts)," with the first session focusing on ancestry and identity starting at 4 p.m. The Citizens Police Academy offers a tuition-free four-week program introducing community members to the Las Cruces Police Department. Spring openings are available at various locations for $100 per semester with payment plans offered.

Additionally, the City of Las Cruces is working on revitalizing neighborhoods around El Paseo and S Solano corridors between Lohman and University Avenues as part of its development initiatives.
