The Parks and Recreation Department has announced a series of weekly hiking and walking events scheduled for April and May. These activities are designed to cater to individuals of all ages, regardless of their experience level, offering opportunities for social interaction and health benefits.

The "Hiking Trails in the Southwest" program will occur every Friday from April 11 through May 23, 2025, at various locations. Participants must register by the day before their chosen event. Registration can be completed in person at the Frank O’Brien Papen Community Center or online under the Adult and Family Programs tab.

Participants are advised to wear suitable footwear and prepare for weather conditions with hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, and ample water supplies. Some venues may require a parking pass.

The schedule for these activities is as follows:

- On April 11, Picacho Mountain offers a 2.2-mile hike with the meet-up location yet to be determined.

- On April 18, Dripping Springs Trail presents a 3-mile route starting at Dripping Springs Natural Area.

- On April 25, Ridge Line and Discovery features a 3.2-mile trail with an unspecified meet-up point.

- On May 2, Mesilla Valley Bosque Trail provides a shorter option at 1.6 miles beginning at Calle del Norte in Mesilla.

- On May 9, Veterans Park Dam offers a 2.8-mile walk along Roadrunner Parkway in Las Cruces.

- On May 16, La Cueva Loop Trail spans 2.9 miles starting from Dripping Springs Natural Area.

- Finally, on May 23, “A” Mountain concludes the series with a more challenging 5-mile trek starting from University Avenue/Dripping Springs Road.

For additional details or inquiries, contact the Frank O’Brien Papen Community Center at (575) 541-2454.

April is also recognized as Safe Digging Month. Residents are reminded to call 811 for assistance with locating and mapping utilities before digging projects.
