Branigan Cultural Center is set to unveil its latest exhibition, "The Dinner Party: Multicultural Crossroads in Clay," which will be available for public viewing from November 1, 2024, through January 18, 2025. An opening reception and awards ceremony featuring artists and juror John Rawlings is scheduled from 5-7 p.m. on November 1 at the Branigan Cultural Center located at 501 N. Main St.
Presented by the Potters’ Guild of Las Cruces, this exhibit marks the celebration of the 175th anniversary of Mesilla and Las Cruces, New Mexico. The featured artists aim to honor this milestone by interpreting the historical and cultural significance of these regions through clay art.
Nine artists have contributed to the exhibit by creating unique place settings with handmade dinnerware that incorporate motifs representing the Southwest's spirit. Themes include crosses, crossroads, nature, and landscapes that connect the region’s past with its present.
Inspired by Judy Chicago’s renowned art piece "The Dinner Party," this exhibition highlights the deep artistic traditions of southern New Mexico while encouraging viewers to contemplate Mesilla and Las Cruces' multifaceted cultural identity.
The Potters’ Guild of Las Cruces was established in 1981 by a small group of southern New Mexico artists who sought to foster a ceramics community due to limited support for pottery sales or ceramic arts promotion at that time. Over the years, many members have remained active within the Guild, showcasing diverse local talents.
Guild membership comprises Native American artists, local families with longstanding ties to Las Cruces, retirees from across the nation, and students exploring ceramic arts for the first time. The Guild continues its mission to promote clay as a significant medium for artistic expression.
Visitors can access Branigan Cultural Center from Tuesday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., and on Saturday from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., free of charge. It is accessible via Roadrunner Transit Route 1 at Stop 1. For further details, individuals are encouraged to visit the Las Cruces Museums website or contact (575) 541-2154.
