The number of stolen Hyundai and Kia vehicles remains high in Las Cruces, prompting police to remind owners to update their security software. In 2024, 70 Hyundai and 38 Kia cars have been reported stolen. The Elantra is the most targeted model, with 49 out of the 70 stolen Hyundais being this model.
Hyundai and Kia announced software updates in 2023 that require the ignition key for engine start and extend the alarm duration from 30 seconds to one minute. The Las Cruces Police Department urges vehicle owners to install these updates promptly by contacting local dealers or calling Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151 or Kia at 1-800-333-4542.
For certain key-start models, free steering wheel locks are available at the Las Cruces Police Department on a first-come, first-served basis. Owners must present current registration for eligibility.
Police advise all car owners to consider installing anti-theft alarms and remind them not to leave keys or firearms inside unattended vehicles while ensuring doors are locked.
