The Las Cruces Fire Department is reminding residents to check their smoke alarms and replace batteries as daylight saving time ends this weekend. Clocks will be set back one hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 3, marking the transition to standard time.

The department advises that when adjusting clocks, it is also a good opportunity to install fresh batteries in smoke alarms. Most people are expected to change their clocks before going to bed on Saturday evening.

Additionally, the fire department recommends testing smoke alarms to ensure they function correctly. This can be done by pressing and holding the alarm's "test" button. A loud beep or ring indicates proper operation.

Residents are cautioned against using candles or matches under detectors for testing purposes, as repeated exposure to heat or smoke may cause malfunction during an actual fire.

For further information about smoke alarms, individuals can contact the Las Cruces Fire Department at (575) 528-3473.
