Members of the New Mexico State University art department are preparing for a day of community engagement with their "Open Studios" event on Saturday, November 9. From noon to 4 p.m., visitors can participate in workshops, guided tours, and shop at the student art sale at Devasthali Hall, located at 1308 E. University Ave.
Graduate students will showcase their work during the event. Johanna Typaldos, a graduate teaching assistant and coordinator of this year's event, stated, "This is a good way to engage with the community by informing them of museum events, education opportunities, and club events."
The event offers undergraduate and graduate students a chance to display and sell their artwork. Elham Sabri, one of the graduate students participating, aims to share her cultural background through her work. "I would love to get people familiar with my culture," said Sabri. Her works protest the Iranian regime and explore women's rights.
Abigail Tuggle is another participant who will open her studio for public viewing. She is working on clothing modified with personal stories inspired by rocks collected around New Mexico. "Thinking about how the layers of rock build up to tell a story over time just like layers of experiences that form our identity," Tuggle explained.
Darcy Matthews, an undergraduate student and president of the Metals club, will be involved in the student club sales during the event. Matthews remarked on the value of community interaction: "It's nice to interact with and contribute to community events." Her collection features handmade earrings, pins, and pendants painted with clown imagery.
Typaldos expressed pride in planning demonstrations that facilitate viewer participation: “My main goal for the event is to show how cool it is to be an art student here.”
Visitors can also view three newly opened exhibits at The University Art Museum along with NMSU’s retablo collection.
