New Mexico State University is set to hold its ninth annual Military and Veterans Appreciation Week from November 9 to 15. The event is aimed at honoring military members, veterans, and their families within the university community.
"Military and Veterans Appreciation Week at New Mexico State University is dedicated to recognizing and honoring the service, dedication and sacrifices of military members, veterans and their families within the university community," said Hector Sanchez, Military and Veterans Programs director. "This event aims to build awareness, foster appreciation and offer support resources for those who have served or are currently serving in the military."
The week will commence with the Las Cruces Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, November 9, at 11 a.m. in Downtown Las Cruces. The parade's theme for 2024 is Honoring Veteran First Responders, featuring NMSU’s Army and Air Force ROTC.
On Monday, November 11, the events will officially begin at NMSU with an inaugural ceremony at Aggie Memorial Tower at 10 a.m., followed by the U.S. Army Cadet Command Special Recognition and Contracting Ceremony. The Student Veterans Organization and Battling Bastards Student Organization will host an information table outside Corbett Center Student Union from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
"Military and Veterans Appreciation Week strengthens bonds, raises awareness and provides a dedicated platform for showing respect and appreciation, making it a meaningful tradition for all involved," Sanchez added.
A Veterans Day Picnic is scheduled for Tuesday, November 12, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Garcia Center courtyard with food provided by Jim Bobs BBQ free of charge. Local veteran service organizations will also be present with information tables.
Wednesday, November 13 will feature three events from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the northeast side of Corbett Center where NMSU will honor U.S. Armed Forces sea vessels, land vehicles, and aircraft with refreshments available. Information tables hosted by NMSU ROTC Programs, Student Veterans Organization, Battling Bastards Student Organization, and New Mexico National Guard will be set up as well.
Under the Aggie tent on Wednesday, there will be a Veterans Day Celebration organized by the Student Veterans Organization offering refreshments along with cotton candy, snow cones, popcorn, and games.
On Thursday, November 14 an open house hosted by MVP in Corbett Center Room 244 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., allows attendees to learn about MVP staff while enjoying refreshments.
The week concludes with the NMSU Faculty and Staff Veterans Banquet at 6 p.m. on Friday November 15.
