With colder temperatures on the horizon, the Las Cruces Fire Department has issued a reminder for residents to exercise caution when using space heaters. The department emphasizes that while space heaters are generally safe when used as intended, improper use can lead to fire and safety hazards.

The department advises users to adhere strictly to manufacturer instructions whether at home or work. It suggests selecting a space heater tested by an independent laboratory like UL – Underwriter’s Laboratories, and avoiding damaged or worn-out devices. Before each use, users should inspect the heater and its power cord, ensuring it is clean and dust-free as per the manufacturer's guidelines.

Space heaters must be plugged directly into a grounded, three-pronged outlet due to their high wattage. The department warns against using extension cords, multi-outlets, or surge protectors with these devices. Power cords should be positioned safely to prevent tripping hazards and should not be placed over the heater.

Only use space heaters with thermostatic controls to prevent overheating and ensure they have an auto-shutoff feature if tipped or leaned over. Proper ventilation is necessary for placement of these heaters. They should not be operated near fuels, combustibles, curtains, blankets, clothing, furniture that could catch fire, bathtubs, showers or any open water source.

It is advised never to leave a space heater unattended while sleeping or away from the room for long periods. Children and pets should be monitored closely around operating space heaters.
