Maury Giles, a New Mexico State University alumnus and senior vice president of Growth at Material Plus IO, shared insights on the future of artificial intelligence with students during homecoming week in November. With over 25 years of experience in market research, Giles emphasized the importance of communication skills in using generative AI effectively.
“Using generative AI requires you to be able to communicate clearly in your language,” said Giles. He highlighted that understanding language is crucial when utilizing AI tools, as it differs from traditional search methods like Google.
Giles encouraged students to engage with AI tools now to stay abreast of the rapidly evolving landscape. He discussed the potential for hyper-personalized generative AI agents, describing them as digital clones that can perform tasks on behalf of individuals. “Every time we use AI to help craft and distribute something on our behalf, we're incrementally constructing our digital doppelganger,” he explained.
The development model for software has shifted since 2022, with generative AI allowing open access for testing and use. Despite concerns about AI's capabilities surpassing human cognitive tasks, Giles urged embracing AI proficiency. “I believe what matters for you individually is that you expose yourself to AI if you haven't already,” he stated.
Giles assured students that familiarity with AI tools would be essential in their future careers, as generative AI becomes integral to professional activities.
