Carlos Carpio Ochoa, a seasoned academic with a global perspective, has been appointed as the head of New Mexico State University’s Department of Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Business. Carpio Ochoa, who began his educational journey in Honduras, aims to shape the future of agriculture and agribusiness in New Mexico.

Carpio Ochoa has expressed his growing involvement as a collaborator and leader in various academic research projects across the United States and globally. His move to NMSU follows over ten years as a faculty member at Texas Tech University. He joined NMSU's College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences to contribute to developing the state's agricultural sector.

His strategic vision includes addressing the needs of local stakeholders while expanding AEAB’s international presence. He intends to leverage expertise in environmental and natural resources research, enhance quantitative analysis capabilities, and strengthen partnerships with industry and government entities.

He believes that educating future agribusiness leaders and conducting applied economics research will help achieve these objectives. “Providing New Mexicans with timely and relevant economic and business information and training opportunities can help them succeed in their business ventures, support the growth of the state’s economy, and sustainably manage the state’s natural resources,” he stated.

Carpio Ochoa is enthusiastic about working alongside his faculty team to implement this new direction for the department.

He holds a bachelor’s degree from Universidad “El Zamorano” in Honduras (1999), a master’s degree from Texas Tech (2002), and a Ph.D. from North Carolina State University (2006).
