Between 2023 and 2024, Las Cruces Public Schools (LCPS) Health Services Department celebrated the arrival of 11 newborns. This wave of new additions involved registered nurses, health assistants, and one athletic trainer.

"I had to keep a spreadsheet!" remarked Shawna Bailey, Director of Health Services for LCPS. "We are thrilled for each of them." The series of births began with the first child born on April 4, 2023, and continued through September 16, 2024.

The district employs 44 school nurses across its schools. Historically, it has been among the few districts nationwide to staff a registered nurse at each school. Managing maternity leave presented challenges but was feasible for Bailey with assistance from former LCPS staff.

"We were fortunate to have some of our retired school nurses come back to help out and substitute while the new moms were on maternity leave," added Bailey. Another baby is expected in 2025.
