A collision involving a vehicle and a bicycle on Alameda Boulevard led to the death of a 61-year-old man on Tuesday evening.

At approximately 7:20 p.m. on January 7, 2025, Las Cruces police and fire departments responded to reports of an accident near the intersection of North Alameda Boulevard and Harvard Drive. Upon arrival, first responders found a bicyclist unconscious with critical injuries.

The bicyclist was transported to Mountainview Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. Authorities identified him as Lorenzo Espinoza, aged 61, from Las Cruces.

Traffic investigators determined that Espinoza was traveling north in a designated bicycle lane on Alameda Boulevard when he was hit from behind by a gray 2017 Chevrolet Equinox. The vehicle was driven by a 31-year-old man who remained at the scene and has cooperated with the investigation.

"Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in this crash," officials stated. The investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been filed at this time.
