The Mesilla Valley Film Society is set to screen the film "A Long Road to Tao" from March 28 through April 3 at the historic Fountain Theatre in Mesilla. The opening night gala is scheduled for Friday, March 28, at 7:30 p.m., with tickets available for $18 on the film society's website.
Sherwin Lau, a professor at New Mexico State University's Creative Media Institute, served as the director of photography for the film. Lau has been involved in various independent films, documentaries, commercials, and music videos since 2006. He also teaches undergraduate courses in film production.
"A Long Road to Tao" was filmed partly in Las Cruces and Mesilla and included students from NMSU’s Creative Media Institute in its production team. Additionally, NMSU film students assisted casting director Jennifer Schwalenberg during the process.
The week-long event will feature special appearances by producer Michael Allen and director Alex Carig on opening night. Sherwin Lau and several local cast members are also expected to attend.
Michael Allen authored "Tao of Surfing," a Pulitzer Prize-nominated book that inspired the film. Alex Carig directed the movie and co-wrote its screenplay with Allen. The story revolves around a writer who grapples with his best friend's terminal illness while exploring themes of Taoism and Native American spirituality.
Screenings from March 29 through April 3 will have regular ticket prices set at $10 for adults and $8 for students. A discounted showing is scheduled for Sunday, March 30, at 2 p.m., offering student tickets at $6 with valid identification. Further information about the Mesilla Valley Film Society can be found on their website, while details about NMSU’s Creative Media Institute are available online as well.
