New Mexico State University Foundation CEO Sylvia Y. Acosta has been recognized as a History Maker by the New Mexico Historic Women Marker Program. This initiative celebrates women who have contributed significantly to the state's history, including artists, educators, entrepreneurs, and leaders since the 1600s.
The program features over 100 roadside markers dedicated to these influential figures. It also honors living women making a significant impact in New Mexico today. Acosta is one of eight honorees this year, acknowledged for her advocacy for underserved communities and commitment to student success. Her efforts have strengthened the NMSU Foundation through expanded impact and improved operations.
Acosta expressed her gratitude, saying, "I am honored to be recognized alongside the incredible women who have shaped New Mexico’s history. This is a tribute to education, advocacy and community."
A ceremony at the New Mexico Roundhouse will take place from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on March 6 in honor of National Women’s History Month. The event will celebrate this year's honorees featured in New Mexico Magazine's March issue. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and other supporters are expected to speak at this public event.
The recognition of women's contributions began with an initiative in 2006 by the International Women’s Forum-New Mexico, partnering with state authorities. More information can be found at www.nmhistoricwomen.org.
