Las Cruces Public Schools has begun installing weapons detection systems at select middle and high schools as part of an ongoing effort to enhance safety for students and staff. The systems are designed to identify potential threats efficiently and are being placed at key entry points. Last month, installations were completed at Lynn Community Middle School, Sierra Middle School, Organ Mountain High School, Picacho Middle School, and Vista Middle School. The district plans to extend these installations to all middle and high schools in the coming months.
Training for staff will occur concurrently with the installations, ensuring full implementation after training is completed. Ignacio Ruiz, LCPS Superintendent of Schools, stated: “Our school district, community, and the LCPS Board of Education has done a lot of work to get to this point.” He emphasized that safety is a major concern for students, parents, and staff: “The installation of these weapons detection systems is an important step in our ongoing efforts to provide a secure educational setting.”
In December 2024, the LCPS Board of Education revised Policy JIH regarding student searches and seizures in preparation for these systems. The Evolv Weapons Detection Systems are grant-funded and were part of a pilot program last year during public events at several LCPS schools. Feedback from students, parents, and community members was collected during this time.
These detection systems utilize advanced technology to scan for prohibited items while maintaining a seamless entry process. They complement existing security measures such as campus security personnel, surveillance cameras, and emergency preparedness training.
