Demolition has begun on Thomas and Brown Hall at New Mexico State University (NMSU), previously housing the Klipsch School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The project aims to improve educational facilities for engineering students and faculty.
The building, constructed in 1971, had undergone minor renovations but was deemed outdated due to design inefficiencies, poor energy use, plumbing issues, and inadequate power systems. A new facility will replace it, serving as the home for the Klipsch School and offering multidisciplinary learning spaces to foster collaboration.
“Modern facilities play a crucial role in attracting, training and retaining students, serving as a foundation for student success,” stated Steve Stochaj, department head of the Klipsch School. He added that the new space would provide various resources such as tutoring, peer mentoring, leadership development, industry connections, and opportunities for micro-credentials.
Funding for this project comes from a General Obligation Bond approved by New Mexico voters in 2023 which allocated $22.5 million. An additional $10 million was provided from the state’s General Fund in 2024. This financial support is part of a larger initiative to enhance educational facilities across New Mexico.
“This new facility represents a major investment in the future of engineering education at NMSU,” said David Jáuregui, interim dean of the College of Engineering. “By providing state-of-the-art spaces for learning, research and collaboration, we are ensuring that our students and faculty have the resources they need to excel.”
During construction, the Klipsch School has moved to Goddard Annex with faculty relocated within other College of Engineering buildings. The replacement aligns with NMSU's goal to offer modern educational environments focused on efficiency and student needs.
As demolition continues and construction advances, NMSU engages with stakeholders including students, faculty, alumni, industry partners, and the local community to ensure that the new facility meets user needs while supporting university goals.
