Grant County commissioners passed several resolutions during their regular meeting in early January, seven of which would allocate matching funds to Colonias grants.
The Colonias resolutions received a single unanimous vote, the Silver City Daily Press reported. There were seven Colonias resolutions.
Southwest New Mexico Council of Governors Executive Director Priscilla Lucero proposed using the Colonias funds to create a sewer system for Indian Hills. Several residents have expressed support for the idea, while others believe it is unneeded.
Maddy Hayden, the public information officer for the New Mexico Environment Department, told the Silver City Daily Press that Indian Hills yields a higher percentage of complaints regarding their current septic systems, but that those issues are typically from lack of maintenance by property owners.
Opponents to the proposal believe it will be too expensive since installing a sewer system could take as many as 20 years to install and complete because the area is rocky and the roads weren't made with sewers in mind, according to the newspaper.
