Las Cruces Public Schools Superintendent, Ignacio Ruiz, recently visited White Sands Missile Range on April 12, 2024, in an effort to expand his knowledge of the educational institutions in the region. During his visit, Ruiz was accompanied by White Sands Missile Range Garrison Command Sgt. Major Jamal Latore, who provided him with a comprehensive overview of the installation's history, mission, and operations.

Ruiz had the opportunity to meet with White Sands Missile Range Commander Col. George Turner and gain insights into the range's unique capabilities, which are crucial for the U.S. Department of Defense. The visit also included interactions with various departments and personnel at the installation, including the Middle School Teen Facility and White Sands School, an educational program for children of military personnel stationed at the missile range.

Expressing his thoughts on the visit, Ruiz stated, “I am glad to be here and get to know a little more about the base and visit a little more in depth at the school. But I really want to look at what are the resources offered to our kids here at the base. It is great to see that there are fun type of resources and educational resources out here.”

Ruiz emphasized the importance of ensuring that Las Cruces Public Schools meet the needs of families based out of White Sands and that they are aware of the opportunities available within the district. He also highlighted the significance of providing families who are relocating with access to up-to-date online resources.

The visit left Ruiz with a deep appreciation for the role White Sands Missile Range plays in the region's educational and military landscape, potentially influencing his future decisions regarding the district's initiatives and resources.
