Las Cruces Utilities has introduced a new solid waste mini-truck named Little Grabby, following a naming competition held in April 2024. The competition took place at the City’s Weed and Seed Program, located at the A. Fielder Memorial Safe Haven facility on N. Tornillo Street. The mini-truck is designed to navigate narrow streets in older neighborhoods where larger trash collection vehicles face challenges.

Children participating in the program were shown a demonstration of the mini-truck and invited to submit name suggestions. Over 40 names were proposed by the children, who then voted on the final choice. The selected name, Little Grabby, was decoratively added to the vehicle alongside the LCU logo.

The announcement of the winning name occurred on Thursday, September 26, 2024, at the A. Fielder Memorial Safe Haven parking lot. Third grader Milah Lee was recognized for her submission of the name Grabby and received a certificate and prize bag for her contribution.

LCU staff decided to add “Little” to honor William Little, a retired member of the LCU Board of Commissioners who served since its inception in 2006.

Little Grabby has been operational for several weeks with a hauling capacity of 150 containers compared to about 700 containers hauled by full-size LCU solid waste trucks. Participants of the Weed and Seed Program range from ages 5-11 years old, each receiving a bag of fun items from LCU as appreciation for their participation in the naming event.
