Las Cruces City Council convened on October 7, 2024, and approved a resolution to expand the Mesilla Valley Community of Hope’s Homeless Outreach Program. Initially funded in fiscal year 2021 to aid residents affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, the program will now extend its reach to unhoused individuals lacking awareness or transportation to services at the Community of Hope campus. The expansion includes providing transportation, day shelter, housing referrals, social services, and employment opportunities.

The funding for this expansion was previously allocated. The recent vote authorizes the City Manager to amend the contract with the Community of Hope.

Additionally, the council approved a Community Development Block Grant agreement with Jardin de los Niños for a roof replacement project. The building requires an estimated $650,000 for a new roof. Jardin has secured $250,000 from New Mexico Capital Outlay funds and received $278,500 from Community Development Block Grant funds approved by the city on Monday. Jardin is still seeking approximately $121,000 needed for completion.

Jardin de los Niños has been providing childcare and education services since 1994 to children aged six to ten years and their families.

The council also greenlit three public art projects: one at East Mesa Public Recreation Complex; another at Fire Station 1; and one more at Fire Station 6. These projects are funded through a GO Bond allocation designated for public art as per city ordinance.

The East Mesa Public Recreation Complex received 155 applications for its project. The City Art Board recommended James Moore's sculpture "Dance of Life," with a budget of about $100,000. This recommendation was unanimously approved along with Jason Butler's illuminated Maltese Cross artwork at Fire Station 1 ($25,000) and Trevor O’Tool's stainless-steel sculpture at Fire Station 6 ($75,000).

Due to Indigenous Peoples’ Day on October 14th, Las Cruces City Council will next meet in a work session on October 15th at Council Chambers.
