Las Cruces police are providing limited storage options for unhoused individuals as the enforcement of a new Shopping Cart Ordinance begins on October 16. The ordinance, approved by the City Council on August 5, aims to address public nuisances and hazards associated with shopping carts removed from retail locations.
The Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD) has placed a Conex box, a large shipping container, at their station on Picacho Avenue. This container is equipped with shelving to store personal belongings for those who previously relied on shopping carts. The service is free for the unhoused population.
Stored items must not exceed 35 pounds and are subject to restrictions: no perishables, liquids, medications or drugs, currency, flammables, firearms, or sharp objects are allowed. Items will be searched before being stored.
Unhoused individuals can access this service by visiting the Records window at the Las Cruces Police Department located at 217 E. Picacho Ave., during specified hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The LCPD's initiative coincides with efforts to mitigate issues related to displaced shopping carts in public spaces.
