On the first day of the Shopping Cart Collection Initiative, a total of 60 shopping carts were returned at two locations in Las Cruces. Most of these carts, collected on Thursday, October 10, belonged to seven different retail stores. However, the ownership of three carts remains unidentified.

The initiative allows individuals possessing shopping carts from retail establishments to return them without facing any penalties. The Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD) is responsible for collecting these carts and ensuring that no enforcement action is taken during this period. Once collected, police will contact the respective businesses to retrieve their property.

On Thursday, LCPD gathered shopping carts at two designated sites: the Community of Hope located at 999 W. Amador Ave., and a parking lot situated on the 2200 block of East Lohman Avenue.

A second and final collection event is scheduled by officers and Community Outreach personnel for Tuesday, October 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This initiative precedes the enforcement of a new Shopping Cart Ordinance set to begin on October 16, 2024. Adopted by City Council in August, this ordinance's enforcement was postponed until mid-October to educate residents about the new regulation and facilitate the return of any misplaced carts within the community.
