The Las Cruces Fire Department is emphasizing the importance of smoke alarms during Fire Prevention Week 2024, which runs from October 6 to October 12. The theme for this year is “Smoke alarms: make them work for you.”
Residents and those living in apartments are encouraged by the department to check their smoke alarms to ensure they are functioning correctly. To test a smoke alarm, individuals should press and hold the device's "test" button. A loud beep or ring indicates proper operation. The department advises against using heat or smoke, such as lighting candles or matches under the detector, as repeated exposure can lead to malfunction during an actual fire.
It is recommended that working smoke alarms be installed on every level of a home, including basements and attics. Additionally, there should be a functioning alarm in each bedroom and outside every sleeping area.
The Las Cruces Fire Department suggests replacing batteries and testing smoke alarms at least twice annually. With Daylight Saving Time ending at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 3, 2024, many people adjust their clocks before going to bed the night prior. The department sees this as an ideal time to replace batteries and test smoke alarms.
