Las Cruces police recently collected 133 shopping carts over a two-day period in preparation for enforcing the new Shopping Cart Ordinance. The initiative took place before enforcement began, allowing residents to return carts without penalty.

On October 10, the first day of the collection effort, 60 carts were gathered at two different locations within Las Cruces. On October 15, an additional 73 carts were collected within city limits. Police will identify which businesses own these carts and contact them for retrieval.

The Shopping Cart Collection Initiative provided an opportunity for individuals possessing retail establishment shopping carts to return them without facing consequences. Starting October 16, it is illegal under the Las Cruces Municipal Code to remove, possess, abandon, or alter a shopping cart belonging to a retail business. Violations are considered petty misdemeanors.

This ordinance was adopted by the City Council in August 2024. The Las Cruces Police Department delayed enforcement until October 16 to allow time for educating the public about the new regulation and facilitating the return of misplaced carts within the community.
